Whether you're starting a vending route or adding to the one you have, the first big decision is the same: buy new, or buy used? Both can be the right call. It comes down to your budget, your locations, and how much risk you're comfortable with.

Why buy new

A new machine comes with the latest equipment, a clean history, and nothing hidden. You know exactly what you're getting. The tradeoff is price. More money up front means it takes longer to earn back.

Why buy used

A good used machine can earn the same money as a new one for a lot less up front. That's why many operators start with used. They spend less on the machine and more on finding great locations. The catch is that "used" covers a wide range, so you have to look closely.

What to check on a used machine

The cabinet and glass. Look for cracks, deep scratches, rust, and dents. Cosmetic wear is fine, but structural damage isn't.

The payment system. Ask whether the bill validator and coin mechanism work, and whether the machine takes cards or can be upgraded to. A machine that only takes cash will lose sales.

The spirals and trays. Make sure they turn smoothly and fit the products you plan to sell. Ask how they're set up now.

A test vend. If you can, watch it sell an item from start to finish. It's the simplest way to see the whole machine work.

Parts. Ask whether parts are still easy to find for that model. An older machine is only a bargain if you can keep it running.

Delivery. Ask how it gets to your location and what that costs. Moving a machine is a job of its own.

What happens after the sale. Ask what's covered if something fails in the first few weeks, and get the answer in writing.

The short version

New buys you certainty. Used buys you a head start. Either way, the questions above will keep you from buying someone else's problem.
